UP AURA / typographic identity v4
Owner decision · nothing applied

Wordmark only · custom type · app icon first

Wordmark only.

The owner asked for minimal geometric, executed better. No symbol, no separate icon: the name is the identity. Ten letterform directions below, each drawn as custom type from the OFL faces, then outlined. Every one is designed as a 1024 square first, then as a site header. This is a comparison, not a recommendation.

The calibration

What the owner said, turned into typographic rules. Every direction is judged against these, in this order.

The feel

  • Premium means one weight, real spacing, no effects. Nothing is added to make it look expensive.
  • Hard means weight and contrast, not aggression: heavy capitals, clean cuts.
  • Calm means space: no shadows, no outlines, no gradients anywhere.

The rule

  • Wordmark only. No abstract symbol. Where a direction needs a square, the icon is a cut of the wordmark itself.
  • App icon first. Each direction was drawn in a 1024 square, then checked at 180, 64, 32 and 16 px and in a circle crop.
  • Custom type. The OFL faces are raw material: cuts, extensions, ligatures and one custom letter, then outlined.

The references

  • Nike, Supreme, Apple, Linear, Vercel, Monster, Red Bull: cited for discipline, never copied.
  • What is taken from them: one container, one weight, optical centring, type as the mark, no decoration.
  • What is not taken: their marks, their type, their colours, their layouts.

The ten

Large wordmark, then the real app-icon sizes, the circle avatar, and the two contexts that decide it: a phone tile and a site header.

01

Boxed wordmark

UP AURA

phone tile

@upaura

site header and social avatar

The box is the identity: the name sits inside a solid rounded rectangle and is knocked out of it.

Why it fits
Supreme discipline: one container, one weight, nothing else. The box is optically centred like an Apple shape, not drawn by eye.
Trade-off
The strongest avatar in the set and instantly a badge, but a box is the most common streetwear move: spacing has to be perfect or it reads as merch.
02

Extended caps

UP AURA

phone tile

@upaura

site header and social avatar

Extended caps, tight tracking, one line: calm, wide, expensive.

Why it fits
Linear and Vercel wide capitals with Apple restraint: one weight, no decoration, real spacing. The UA pair is cropped out for the icon.
Trade-off
Reads premium in a site header and crops beautifully, but it cannot shrink far: below about 16 px the letters fill in.
03

Condensed heavyweight

UP AURA

phone tile

@upaura

site header and social avatar

Condensed heavyweight in one line: the maximum name in the smallest footprint.

Why it fits
Monster and Red Bull compression for hardness, without their outlines, chrome or effects. One letter becomes the app icon.
Trade-off
The best of the set at small sizes, but condensed caps read sportswear and energy drinks more than software.
04

A-rrow

UP AURA

phone tile

@upaura

site header and social avatar

One custom letter: the counter of the A is an upward arrow, the only bespoke shape in the word.

Why it fits
Nike discipline: one altered letter carries the whole attitude, no separate symbol anywhere.
Trade-off
It gives the word a story, but the arrow only reads at icon size; at header size the A is simply a heavy A.
05

Contrast cut

UP AURA

phone tile

@upaura

site header and social avatar

Heavy capitals sliced by one hairline: a thin line against a heavy mass.

Why it fits
Fashion-house contrast and Linear hairline precision: the cut is the only ornament.
Trade-off
The most expensive read in the set, but the cut costs a little legibility at small sizes and needs a clean background.
06

Stencil cuts

UP AURA

phone tile

@upaura

site header and social avatar

Industrial stencil: two clean vertical cuts across Archivo Black capitals.

Why it fits
Red Bull and Monster hardness without the chrome, plus Linear grid discipline in the cut spacing.
Trade-off
Distinctive and hard, but stencil reads military or industrial and can look like a printing fault at 16 px.
07

Stacked block

UP AURA

phone tile

@upaura

site header and social avatar

A two line block: UP above AURA, flush, tight, poster like.

Why it fits
Nike poster typography and Apple two line lockups: one block that fills a square naturally.
Trade-off
Reads like a brand block and fills an icon with no crop, but two lines are slower in a site header.
08

UA ligature

UP AURA

phone tile

@upaura

site header and social avatar

The A and U of AURA are drawn into each other at one junction; the initials become the icon.

Why it fits
Supreme custom lettering discipline and Nike one gesture marks: the drawing is the idea, not a symbol next to it.
Trade-off
The most designed wordmark and a natural icon, but the ligature demands craft and can read as a printing error at small sizes.
09

Rising baseline

180 64 32 16 avatar
UP AURA

phone tile

@upaura

site header and social avatar

The whole word sits on an ascending baseline: one and a half degrees of lift across seven letters.

Why it fits
Nike forward motion and Apple calm: the movement is in the baseline, nowhere else.
Trade-off
Subtle and kinetic in a header, but easy to miss and awkward to align against other type.
10

Negative-space point

UP AURA

phone tile

@upaura

site header and social avatar

The A counter is cut to a tall upward point: geometry only, no added symbol.

Why it fits
Apple geometry and Linear minimal cuts: one counter changed, nothing added.
Trade-off
Quiet and precise, but the change is so subtle that at header size it is just a heavy A.

Type and build

How the ten were made, and what is in the folder.

Outlined, not typeset

The base faces are Archivo Black, Archivo variable (width 125, weight 900), Anton and Bebas Neue, all OFL, all self hosted. Every wordmark and icon in this kit is converted to outlines: no text element survives, so the assets do not depend on a font being installed, and no webfont is requested by this page. The custom edits are real path work: a custom A with an arrow counter, a custom A with a pointed counter, a hairline cut, two stencil cuts, a fused A-U junction and an ascending baseline.

What ships with a pick

A chosen direction becomes the production set in one pass: wordmark (ink and bone, outlined), app icon at 1024 with 180/64/32/16 exports and a safe-area check, circle avatar usage, a favicon, and one page of usage rules (clearspace, minimum size, monochrome, backgrounds). The gallery and the rejected directions do not ship.

Nothing in this folder changes the console, the site or any doc until the owner picks.
